The Ciliau and Lower Porthamel are certified organic. Organic farming is a modern, sustainable farming system which uses less of the earth’s finite resources to maintain a long-term fertility of the soil, while produce high quality nutritious food. Certified farms are strictly regulated and so it is only certification which can guarantee properly organic methods are being followed.
Artificial fertilisers, pesticides, growth regulators and livestock feed additives are prohibited.
Soil fertility on an organic farm relies on the use of legumes, crop rotation, the application of composted animal manures, and ground-rock minerals. Weeds are controlled by mechanical methods while pests tend not to be a problem due to the inherent bio-diversity in the eco-system on the farm.
Our farms are mixed arable and livestock, with the majority of our feedstuff being produced ‘in house’. This includes hay, silage, maizes, beans, grains and roots. We produce beef and lamb for our own butchers’ shop at Hay-on-Wye.
